Top-down control of visual cortex by the frontal eye fields through oscillatory realignment

چکیده

Abstract Voluntary allocation of visual attention is controlled by top-down signals generated within the Frontal Eye Fields (FEFs) that can change excitability lower-level areas. However, mechanism through which this control achieved remains elusive. Here, we emulated generation an attentional signal using single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation to activate FEFs and tracked its consequences over cortex. First, documented changes brain oscillations electroencephalography found evidence for a phase reset occipital sites at beta frequency. We then probed perceptual triggered assessed anatomical specificity. show FEF activation leads cyclic modulation perception extrastriate but not primary cortex excitability, again conclude originating in causally shape activity mechanisms oscillatory realignment.

Top-down control of human visual cortex by frontal and parietal cortex in anticipatory visual spatial attention.

Advance information about an impending stimulus facilitates its subsequent identification and ensuing behavioral responses. This facilitation is thought to be mediated by top-down control signals from frontal and parietal cortex that modulate sensory cortical activity. Here we show, using Granger causality measures on blood oxygen level-dependent time series, that frontal eye field (FEF) and in...

Top-down control of visual cortex in migraine populations.

The pathophysiology of migraine includes a heightened excitability of visual cortex that persists between headache events and that has been linked to impaired inhibitory intracortical processes. Here we examined the hypothesis that this cortical pathophysiology would affect the top-down attentional control of visual cortex. We asked two groups of participants-migraineurs (N=29) and non-migraine...

Inhibitory Control and the Frontal Eye Fields

Inhibitory control mechanisms are important in a range of behaviors to prevent execution of motor acts which, having been planned, are no longer necessary. Ready examples of this can be seen in a range of sports, such as cricket and baseball, where the choice between execution or inhibition of a bat swing must be made in a brief time interval. The role of the FEFs, an area typically described i...

Human frontal eye fields and visual search.

Recent physiological recording studies in monkeys have suggested that the frontal eye fields (FEFs) are involved in visual scene analysis even when eye movement commands are not required. We examined this proposed function of the human frontal eye fields during performance of visual search tasks in which difficulty was matched and eye movements were neither necessary nor required. Magnetic stim...
